Canada's successful international development strategies are often created by the individuals and communities in developing countries that have passed on their best practices to our agencies. The agencies often do not think beyond that context; transferance of that knowledge remains within the boundaries of those countries. We (as Canadians) need to understand that we have a lot to learn from people in the developing world, we need to to admit that "extreme poverty" does in fact exist in Canada, and we need to be humble enough to get off of our "developed country pedestal" once in awhile and ask for advice.

We know there is extreme poverty in Canada. There is no debating that. I wonder if microfinancing has ever been tried in our Northern communities. If so what are the success stories? And if not yet, what are we waiting for??? We do have the knowledge how to set up this proven financing. Where would we start?
