Guests at the Pier 21 OpeningMr Robert Moody, CEO, Pier 21 Society; Her Honour, The Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of
Nova Scotia; and Mr. Khalil Shariff, CEO, Aga Khan Foundation Canada, inaugurated the Bridges That Unite
exhibition at Pier 21 in Halifax on Tuesday, October 6.

On Tuesday, October 6, Bridges that Unite was officially inaugurated at Pier 21 in Halifax, kicking off a month-long run at Canada's Immigration Museum.

Her Honour, The Honourable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, along with Mr. Robert Moody, CEO of the Pier 21 Society, and Khalil Z. Shariff, CEO of AKFC offered opening remarks before touring the exhibition.

Her Honour noted how fitting it is that an exhibition about Canada's role in the world should be hosted at Pier 21. "This is where we celebrate the world coming to Canada, and the building of the Canadian mosaic that is such a central part of the Canadian identity." she said. "The hundreds of thousands of immigrants who passed through these gates brought a wider perspective to a country that was much too insular before their arrival, now it is Canada's turn to give back to the world that has given it so much.”

Her thoughts were echoed by Mr. Moody. "Pier 21 opened its doors 10 years ago almost to the day," he said. "Since then we have expanded our mandate to tell the stories of all immigrants to Canada, including the broader story of nation-building and the early beginnings of Canada. This is why we're especially thrilled and proud to be hosting Bridges That Unite, an exhibition of not only national but of global significance," he said.

Noting that the latest Canadian to recieve a Nobel Prize was from Nova Scotia, Mr. Shariff remarked that Canadian global leadership takes many forms, but that in a fragile world, the work of peace belongs to all Canadians. The exhibition is, he said "a symbol of what Canada and Canadians do best -- let communities be the architects of their own change."

The exhibition will be on display in the Harbourside Gallery through November 4. Click here for directions and hours for Pier 21.
