In the information age, it is easy to get overwhelmed by what is going on in the world. In order to stay informed, I believe it is important to find themes you are passionate about (food security, human rights, politics, etc) and to build your knowledge base on world affairs through those interests. It is also important not to just inform yourself, but to also learn to sift through the data critically in order to create a balanced perspective.
Creating a balanced perspective is not only about looking for articles, listening to speeches, and reading books that parallel your own views, it is about challenging yourself to dig into issues from as many angles as possible. It's about sometimes taking the "devil's advocate" position in order to build empathy with those who have views in sharp contrast from your own and to get to the root of your own prejudices.
