Sarah Bandali - Mozambique

The field of health has always been a key passion of mine, initially sparked by an interest in the natural sciences and evolving into a more comprehensive public health perspective. Applying these interests and skills towards helping those less fortunate was a dream that became realized through an internship at AKF (Geneva).  The internship paved the path for an extraordinary journey into international health development and provided unique insights into the health programs and policies implemented by AKDN globally.   Through such experiences, my knowledge and passion on issues related to HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and gender relations flourished.

A more intensive understanding of the opportunities and complexities involved in implementing development programs occurred after working in Mozambique for two years.  This was an important step in the journey leading to both personal and professional growth.   The openness of the Mozambican people, the history, the place, the culture, the traditions, and the work all played a role in sculpting my character, my thinking and my outlook on life.

My journey along the path of development will continue, inspired by the spirit of individuals, innovative solutions, cherished friendships and the ultimate aim of eliminating poverty.

The water pump enables villagers to access clean water from a safe source. The availability of clean water complemented with educational messages on safe hygiene practices are essential components which help decrease the spread of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.

Malaria is responsible for the excessively high infant and child deaths in Mozambique.  Prevention plays a pertinent role in curbing malaria through the provision of insecticide treated bed nets and education campaigns.  In this picture, a group of trained villagers spread malaria prevention messages to others through the use of song and dance.

My colleagues at AKF and staff in Cabo Delgado were my support system in Mozambique and became an extension of my family.  I came to the country barely knowing a soul, and left with a family.
